چکیده

We analyze 8 sources with strong mid-infrared excesses in the 13 Myr-old double cluster h & χ Persei. New optical spectra and broadband SEDs (0.36-8 μm) are consistent with cluster membership. We show that material with T∼300-400 K and Ld/L⋆ ∼10 -10 produces the excesses in these sources. Optically-thick blackbody disk models including those with large inner holes do not match the observed SEDs. The SEDs of optically-thin debris disks produced from terrestrial planet formation calculations match the observations well. Thus, some h & χ Persei stars may have debris from terrestrial zone planet formation. Subject headings: planetary systems: formation planetary systems: protoplanetary disks

The Rise and Fall of Debris Disks: MIPS Observations of h and χ Persei and the Evolution of Mid-IR Emission from Planet Formation

We describe Spitzer/MIPS observations of the double cluster, h and χ Persei, covering a ∼ 0.6 square-degree area surrounding the cores of both clusters. The data are combined with IRAC and 2MASS data to investigate ∼ 616 sources from 1.25-24 μm. We use the long-baseline Ks-[24] color to identify two populations with IR excess indicative of circumstellar material: Be stars with 24 μm excess from...

The Open University ’ s repository of research publications and other research outputs AKARI / IRC 18 m survey of warm debris disks

Context. Little is known about the properties of the warm (Tdust 150 K) debris disk material located close to the central star, which has a more direct link to the formation of terrestrial planets than does the low-temperature debris dust that has been detected to date. Aims. To discover new warm debris disk candidates that show large 18 μm excess and estimate the fraction of stars with excess ...

The Evolutionary State of Anemic Circumstellar Disks in IC 348 and The Primordial-to-Debris Disk Transition

We investigate the evolution of ∼ 3 Myr-old MIPS-detected circumstellar disks in IC 348 that may be in an intermediate stage between primordial, optically-thick disks of gas/dust and debris disks characteristic of the final stages of planet formation. We demonstrate that these anemic disks are not a homogenous class of objects corresponding to a unique evolutionary state. Rather, such disks aro...

Large impacts around a solar-analog star in the era of terrestrial planet formation.

The final assembly of terrestrial planets occurs via massive collisions, which can launch copious clouds of dust that are warmed by the star and glow in the infrared. We report the real-time detection of a debris-producing impact in the terrestrial planet zone around a 35-million-year-old solar-analog star. We observed a substantial brightening of the debris disk at a wavelength of 3 to 5 micro...
